SA PORTALADA DES PORT DE MAÓ
PROMOTER: UDG · ARCHITECT: ERIC AZNAR SANS · BUDGET: 3.850.112,25€ · LOCATION: MAÓ - MENORCA (SPAIN) · TYPE OF INTERVENTION: NEW BUILDING & URBAN REFURBISHMENT · STATUS: PROJECT · DATES: 2018
SA PORTALADA DES PORT solves the lake of vertical & horizontal urban connection between Maó's harbour and its town due to the emphasised topographic unevenness - which results emphasised by a high cliff- among them, and at the same time, it offers a solution to the lake of a polyvalent public building in this strategic area to articulate both sides and serve as a meeting point.
Therefore, the project has not only an ubrbanistic scale, but also architectural one, generating an hibrid programme, mixed of public, private and polyvalent use, and at the same time, it works as an horizontal and vertical connection. It can also be used just as a meeting location or as a viewpoint to contemplate the extension of the seaport.
The intervention strategy arises parting from the generation of several graduated layers, disposed between the cliff and the existing road, forming a game with the existing topography, which are connected to several ramps or paths to across the platforms, making more accessible the transition from the harbour to the town centre. These layers at heighest levels will remain attached to the cliff, while, along its transition to the lower levels, the layers turn unfolded gradually, to let the platform be faced with the port. This unfolding operation, generates different exterior terraces where the passerby movements and contemplation happen, while the interior spaces is going to be used for the architectural and functional programme.
The interior spaces contain a lounge bar on its upper level, while the lower ones are reserved for polyvalent expositions, where circulations and exposition rooms will suround the perimeters, reserving the core of the building as an opened double space iluminated by two shafts of light.
All the connections are reinforced with vertical elevators to offer a strictly functional solution.
